Hanukkah 2026 begins at sunset on Friday, December 4 and ends at nightfall on Saturday, December 12. Many families give small gifts each of the eight nights, building up to one bigger present, or choose themed nights to keep it fun.
Here is a gift idea for each of the eight nights, plus a few Hanukkah essentials.
Night 1: Something Cosy
Start the festival with comfort: fuzzy socks, a soft blanket or slippers.
Night 2: Books Night
A new novel, a cookbook or a beautifully illustrated book.
Night 3: Games Night
A board game or card game the whole family can play together, alongside the traditional dreidel.
Night 4: Sweet Treats
Chocolate gelt, gourmet chocolate or a baking kit for making sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts).
Night 5: Self-Care
Candles, bath sets, skincare or a satin pillowcase.
Night 6: Something Creative
Art supplies, a crochet kit, a journal or a craft project.
Night 7: Giving Night
Many families dedicate a night to tzedakah (charity): choose a cause together and donate instead of receiving a gift. It is often the most meaningful night of the eight.
Night 8: The Big One
Save the bigger present for the last night: headphones, a camera, a piece of jewellery or an experience.
Hanukkah Essentials
A beautiful menorah, Hanukkah candles and festive table decor in blue, white and silver.
Hanukkah Traditions to Know
Lighting the menorah: one more candle is added each night. Candles are placed in the menorah from right to left and lit from left to right, so the newest candle is lit first, using the shamash, the helper candle.
Fried foods: latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) are fried in oil to remember the miracle of the oil that lasted eight days.
Dreidel: a spinning-top game played for chocolate gelt. Each side has a Hebrew letter: nun (nothing happens), gimel (take the whole pot), hey (take half), and shin (put one in).
Gelt: chocolate coins, or real coins, given especially to children.
Themed Night Ideas
Some families give each night a theme instead of random gifts: pyjama night, sports night, a family movie night with snacks, experience night (tickets to a show or a day out), handmade night where everyone makes a gift, and of course the giving night dedicated to charity.
Hosting a Hanukkah Party
Keep it simple: a latke bar with toppings (apple sauce, sour cream, smoked salmon), a dreidel tournament with gelt as prizes, blue and silver table decor, and the menorah lighting as the centrepiece of the evening.
